I just want to say thank you to everyone who came out for the latest community night to play Gears of War on my birthday. We have just under 40 people jump in and out of various games. It made for a very fun birthday evening!
Every time we have a community night I always forget how much fun they are! We don’t have them often enough! Look for the next one coming soon! We need to try a new game… something that makes it a bit easier to manage getting so many people in and out of the games.

While we were busy speculating about Wii style motion controls on the Xbox 360, waruwaru was busy making it happen. As you can see in the above video, waruwaru has rigged up an XNA demo using the Wii remote, a project he has dubbed Waru360. Due to some limitations in the current build of XNA, there is a very noticeable lag in the control output. According to the demo’s creator, the program can read input from the remote approximately 5 times per second, which results in the lag apparent in the video. Skeptics that we are, we must point out that the video could be fake, but overall it looks like the real deal. It looks like the 360 is getting motion controls whether Microsoft does it or not. Of course, it won’t be the first time that’s happened. Waruwaru promises that more is coming, we’ll be sure to keep an eye on it.

If you’ve played Crackdown you know locating agility orbs in the game is not only an addiction, but can affect your daily habits. And for that reason Gemeni Ace was kind enough to cut the agility orb sound clip from Major Nelson’s most recent blogcast. This short mp3 is extremely universal and can be used for a variety of things. Have it play on your cell phone when you receive a text message, put it on your mp3 player of choice whenever you spot an orb in the neighborhood, or simply loop it to annoy everyone around you. There are so many practical applications for this Crackdown agility orb sound, how are you going to use it?

The site is having a few performance issues… I worked last night to try and figure out the biggest causes and it seems mostly related to disk fragmentation on one of our database servers. I am taking some steps to work on that, but it might be a little while until it is fixed. According to the disk analyzer, a 32% performance increase will result from proper defragmentation. So we will get there eventually with the Diskeeper InvisiTasking technology… I hope…
Anyone else out there running data-heavy websites? How do you deal with your fragmentation issues on the data side? If you are using mySQL, how often do you run your index defrag (Optimize)?
I never thought Disk I/O would be something that factors into the performance of high traffic sites… Learn something new every day running this place!

GameTrailers has posted a trailer for White Gold: War in Paradise. The game is (get this) and open world first person shooter with RPG elements set in the Caribbean. It seems like taking open world gameplay and setting it in tropical locations is the thing to do nowadays. The video shows off some nice locales, the open nature of the game, the RPG system, and of course some combat for good measure. It’s worth noting that a multiplayer mode has not yet been confirmed by the developer.
White Gold is being developed by Deep Shadows, which is also creating another 360 title by the name of Precursors. Precursors has a similar gameplay style, though it opts for a sci-fi theme instead. White Gold is expected by holiday 2007. What we’ve seen so far is intriguing. Does this interest anyone else out there?

Last year we ran a brief series entitled “That should be on XBLA.” In that series we suggested that the arcade classic shooter, Raiden, would be a perfect fit for the service. At the time, we never imagined a full blown sequel would ever arrive on the Xbox 360. Lo and behold: Raiden IV is coming to the Xbox 360. The news comes from a Team Fremont interview with Chong Ahn, product manager for UFO Interactive. UFO Interactive’s website, incidentally, doesn’t even have an Xbox 360 section. Ahn notes that it has not be decided whether Raiden IV will be a retail product or an Xbox Live Arcade release.
First Ikaruga and now Raiden IV? What did we poor fanboys ever do to deserve this?

North Americans don’t get soccer. Europeans don’t get American football (and are understandably confused as to why it’s called football). Still, both sports have their classic iterations. America has Tecmo Bowl, and Europe has Sensible Soccer. It was revealed some time ago that Sensible Soccer would be making its way to Xbox Live Arcade, and IGN has unearthed a few details about the game. Like many classic Arcade releases, Sensible Soccer will feature enhanced graphics and sound. Codemasters, developer of the series, notes that they intend to maintain the classic feel of the game, and all work will be based on the source code developed for Sensible World of Soccer 96/97. Finally, the game is scheduled to release this summer for both Live Arcade and Windows.
Are any of our European readers excited about this?
