How not to spend $179 on a 120GB hard drive

An X3F regular, AoE, has reminded us about a nifty little trick that lets you use SATA hard drives with the Xbox 360. We reported the story back in January. Just as a refresher, here’s how it works: using a bit of software from Xbox-Scene, you essentially trick your Xbox 360 into thinking any Western Digital BEVS drive is actually an official 360 drive. Of course, you’ll have to possess some hardware and software savvy to get everything humming along.

Before now, the software would work only allow for 20GB of space, because the ID located on each official HDD says as much. Now that official 120GB hard drives will be hitting the market, it should be possible to grab the ID file from a 120GB drive. Of course, we don’t condone such things, nor would we have any idea where to find such a file, but there it is. So, if you’ve got the technical knowhow, you may want to wait a while before laying down 179 smackers for 120GB of space. We’ll let you know as soon as this comes to pass (or not).

X3F readers show off custom 360 equipment

Yesterday we asked you, our beloved readers, to submit your custom faceplate designs, and you guys delivered. Our inbox has birthed forth plenty of great custom designs and we would be remiss in our fanboy duties not to share them. The above design was created by qbix. It seems qbix has been designing faceplates for a while, as his flicrk site is full of them. He even got recognized by Joystiq for his excellent work. Visit his flickr gallery to see lots more.

But wait, there’s more. We received some other great designs too. Check ‘em out after the break.

This faceplate, which we have affectionately dubbed “Squidplate,” is a depiction of, um, a squid. It was created by the girlfriend of X3F reader, razzleson. Congratulations on scoring an artistic lady who likes games, razzleson! Notice that the memory card ports and USB ports have been filled in. Butch never uses ‘em, so good riddance. We also received an Emily the Strange faceplace from Bertrand Le Roy, which you can view on his Flickr account.

And here we have some custom controllers from Boss Tempo. All in all we received a pretty healthy selection of custom modifications, but we’d love to see more. If you’ve got any 360 related mods you’d like to share, please let us know. We’ll show off some more once we get some new entries.

Rare talks Banjo-Kazooie for 360

Filed under:

Lee Schuneman, head of production at Rare, had some time to sit down with GamesIndustry.biz and talk about the upcoming Banjo-Kazooie game for Xbox 360. The first thing he does is assure us that the game is in good hands, stating that the team working on the title is very passionate about it, like Gregg Mayles, the Creative Director, who had the same position for both the original Banjo-Kazooie and Banjo-Tooie. That being said, Banjo’s latest outing will bring new elements to the table, and are noted to be unexpected by fans of the series. If you want to get the for report on the interview, including Rare’s thoughts on Viva Piñata, hit up the “Read” link and have at it.

$179.95 120GB HDD: you’re the man now dog!

Filed under:

Negative fanboy sentiment is gathering around the price of the uber expensive $179.95 120GB HDD. And what better way for us to illustrate the pain in our hearts (and bank accounts) than by viewing a very professionally done YTMND entry. Go ahead, click the link and give it a listen … we’ll wait here. You gave it a listen right? Good, now our commentary will make sense.

The clip features Major Nelson’s “ouch” reaction from his latest podcast and is obviously poking fun at the new HDD’s price. From what we can decipher, Major’s reaction to the HDD’s price goes something along the lines of “uhngh, uhngh, uhngh, uhngh eh eh uhuhuh ooh ouch“, but don’t quote us on that. You can’t deny it, that new drive is one overpriced piece of hardware. Though, we still love you 120GB HDD, but you just cost way to much and don’t get along with our longtime friend 20GB HDD. Heck, we might as well just open the floodgates and hear what everyone thinks. Go ahead fanboys, unleash your opinion on the new 120GB HDD and its price structure. But be nice guys, constructive criticism is always better than hate darts.

[Thanks, tapoxi]

Gears of Warnament starts next month

Microsoft and World Cyber Games are holding a tournament for Gears of War starting on April 9th and continuing through May 6th over Xbox Live. For those four weeks, registrants will compete in online ranked matches, where the top 11 players on the leaderboard will win a trip for two to Prague, one of the inspirations for the “destroyed beauty” look of Gears of War, to compete in the finals. Registration opens today and continues on through April 29th. Fortunately, they mean it when they call this a “Global” tournament, as over 24 countries are eligible to enter. Are you going to give this a shot? Do you think everyone who registers will “play fair”?

Virtua Fighter 5 Box Art

Filed under:

Sure, the game is already out for the PS3 and so people can have a pretty good idea about how the box is going to look for Virtua Fighter 5, but it’s always nice to see it with the proper 360 cover dressing. The difference between the two is slight, at best. The image is the same on the top, bottom and left sides with the 360 version showing more of the characters in the backround on the right. We have a humongous resolution version also available for your scrutiny. Box art aside, you down for some Old school SEGA style fighting?

Team Fortress 2 has a lot of class(es)

Filed under:

Game Informer recently got some hands on time with the upcoming Team Fortress 2, a new twist on a classic game, set to be included in the Half-Life 2 Orange Box along with Portal. Team Fortress 2 will include multiple player classes, ranging from the sneaky spy to the more-bullets-than-brains heavy weapons guy, and it looks like each class will actually play very differently. For instance, the Pryo, with his short range flame thrower, is perfect for tight quarters. The super speedy Scout, on the other hand, is the best choice for lightning fast recon and flag captures. Team Fortress 2 features several game types involving territorial control and, of course, capture the flag.

On a slightly disappointing note, the game is set to ship with only 6 different maps. Also worth noting, only one map is set up for capture the flag at this point. Of course, this could change with the release of downloadable content, but it’s still disappointing.

All in all, the game looks like a great deal of fun. What’s more, with so many character classes from which to choose, anyone should be able to find a niche that’s actually fun to play (yes, even the Medic). Hit the “read” link to check out the full preview, including a breakdown of every character class and their respective loadouts.

Frankie talks Halo 3 dev process

One thing we know for sure is that Halo 3 will be coming out this year, it will be huge, and it’ll be put under one giant microscope. So, how does the Bungie team deal with all the internal pressures, development process, and stay on track? In a Next Generation interview, Bungie’s own Frankie says that compared to Halo 2 the whole project is” well managed, it’s well scheduled, and it’s a pretty happy environment“. Frankie also talks about what the main focus is right now and how they are polishing, refining, and adding layers and layers of goods onto Halo 3’s framework. He also mentions that they do indeed have a hard date when they have to push the Halo 3 beta out the door (which is soon), but doesn’t know when it’ll make it into the public’s hands other than a rough “this Spring”. Halo 3 downloadable content talk and insightful interview banter can be read after the jump.

[Thanks, Eric]

Video: Shivering Isles gameplay

Shivering Isles, the official expansion for The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion is now available, but what is it all about? Perhaps this video will help explain that. Apparently, Shivering Isles is about monsters, giants, and unrelenting madness. To be honest, that sounds great, doesn’t it? You bet your bag of holding it does! The video showcases some of the expansion’s psychotic themes as well as some seriously ferocious beasts, including the giant gatekeeper at the end. If you prefer nothing to be spoiled, you’d best skip this video, because it pretty much lays down the entire beginning to the expansion. As for everyone else, enjoy! Don’t forget to tell us what you think in the comments.
