Beware of the ‘Meat Shield’

Filed under:

Sometimes it almost feels like people are trying really hard to start controversy where there isn’t any. Arizona’s KTVK-TV is the latest in a long line of videogame fear mongering by warning parents of the horrors of the ‘meat shield,’ according to Game Politics.

Citing a Yahoo!Games report detailing features in Gears of War 2 KTVK-TV warns, “A popular video game for the Xbox 360 is getting a sequel this year - and it seems to be raising eyebrows with its level of gore and detail … The game certainly attracted attention for its realistic visuals and battle scenes, but caused some pause when game designers showed off a new attack players can use in the game.”

The report continued to warn, “Players can pick up the corpses of fallen enemies and use them as a “meat shield” to protect themself from enemy fire as they engage in battle from behind the corpse.”

As good as Gears 2 looks, calling it’s visuals realistic is like saying E.T.: The Extra-Terrestrial is based on a true story. Are we really resorting to hyping-up hate for a game months before it releases?

Reminder: X3F LIVE tonight!

Filed under:

We’re thirty minutes from another, but not frequent enough, gaming session with our awesome community. A few people have mentioned problems adding the X3FLIVE gamertag to their friends list so we’ve come up with an idea to fix that issue.

At around 8:45PM tonight we’re going to go through our X3FLIVE friends list and drop a handful of people who aren’t online. If you’d like to join us just fire up your Xbox to stay on the list and for those of you who are getting request bounce backs will be able to add us.

We’re going to go through our list and play with a handful of people and then end the session and play with others. We’ll send out the invites, so if you’re interested in playing make sure to be in GTAIV (that way we know not to disturb a Call of Duty 4 or Halo 3 session). If you don’t get an invite right away join up with other people on our Friends of Friends list and we’ll try to get to you.

We know this isn’t the best system, but its the fairest way around the 100 friend limit on Xbox Live.

We’re going to do sessions of Cops vs. Crooks with Auto-Aim disabled, so bring your ‘A’ game–cuz we sure as hell won’t! We look forward to stealing your car and running you over with it later tonight!

Funny endings return for Silent Hill: Homecoming

Filed under:

Speaking to GameTrailers, Silent Hill: Homecoming producer and composer Akira Yamaoka has revealed that funny endings will be returning in upcoming Double Helix (formerly The Collective) take on the series. When asked about what elements from previous games would be returning in Homecoming, Yamaoka said (through a translator), “I think humor is important. A lot of Silent Hill fans enjoy different endings, like the UFO ending, the dog ending, right? Those funny endings are an important part of Silent Hill.”

We’d be hard-pressed to disagree, as the humorous endings (spoilers … sort of) serve as a much needed counterbalance to the disturbing, soul-shattering imagery that the series is known for. Oh, and Yamaoka’s favorite entry in the series? Silent Hill 2 (ahem … duh). Check out the full interview after the break.

Sega Gamers’ Day Round-up

Filed under:

Reigniting the fire under old franchises like Sonic and Golden Axe it appears Sega is trying to rekindle our nostalgic flame. Based on what we’ve seen from the upcoming Xbox 360 lineup from Sega we’re interested, on paper. A new Hulk game sounds great but movie licenses almost have a vendetta against anything resembling decent. Sonic back to his roots sounds awesome, but realizing the game includes 3D sections instead of the 2D we’ve been seeing get us worried. Golden Axe returns? Wicked! But no co-op and the loss of two original classes has us asking why. What are your thoughts on the upcoming lineup from Sega?

GTA Weekend Wrap Up

Thanks to everyone who attended our community night and played with squidpunch, QforQ or myself, or stopped by the chat room.  We all had a lot of fun dodging cars and bullets, some more successfully then others.  Other then a few connections issues, I think it went pretty well, and it was good to meet some new people.  If you have any other feedback for the event, you can let us know here.

Now onto the winners.  First the T-shirt Drawings.  We randomly chose 4 gamers out of everyone that joined us for the community night festivities.  Each will be taking home a 360voice.com customized T-shirt.  And the winners are…

1. Vector Scalar
2. Jackson The Pro
3. SFU Doom 101
4. DrMuffinStuffer

And finally, our big winner is Feoen who was randomly chosen out of all registered members of the site that played GTA4 this weekend to win a game of his choosing.   If you are one of the winners, please contact us with your full mailing address and shirt size.

Thanks again for all those who participated, we look forward to doing more events like this.

Fix your mistake, rewind added to Madden 09

Filed under:

Being added to Madden NFL 09’s ever growing list of new additions comes the announcement of an “interesting” feature which is being called “EA Sports Rewind“. How it’s explained, this new feature will allow players to go back in time, take a down back and re-do what just occurred if one wasn’t happy with the previous outcome. In it’s simplest form, it’s a do-over. The rewind ability can also be used defensively against your opponent, thus negating any progress or scoring they did the play before. Also, just in case you were wondering, before the game starts players will be able to specify the number of rewinds each team gets per game.

It’s an interesting feature add, but we can’t help but wonder how much it’ll actually be used between multiplayer foes or how annoying it’ll end up being.

Canadian currency buried in Halo 3’s Snowbound

>>>>
In terms of global appeal, Canada’s currency is on fire! It’s the currency of choice. No, wait, it’s the only currency worth using. So, that must be why team Bungie hid a piece of Canadian currency in Halo 3’s Snowbound. Because it’s the crème de la crème of currency … duh! Though, our heavily bias opinion thinks that the best loon portrait goes to the Minnesota state quarter. We aren’t sure if this is an old or new Halo 3 Easter eggs, but it’s new to us so that makes it worthwhile … or something like that. Oh, and be warned that the video’s musical goodness isn’t all that musically good.

Shipping this week: soccer spotlight edition

Another week beyond the Grand Theft Auto IV launch, another super slim lineup of new games. By super slim, we mean precisely one game. The game in question is UEFA Euro 2008 from Electronic Arts. After a quick wiki, we have discovered that UEFA stands for Union of European Football Associations, so … it’s a soccer game then. But what’s this? According to Metacritic, it’s actually a pretty good soccer game. For all the true football fans out there, this week is for you. The rest of you can wait for June 3.

Video: This Project Origin is going to be bloody

> /> /> /> /> >
There’s a new Project Origin combat trailer making the rounds today, giving old-school F.E.A.R. fanboys a warm fuzzy knowing that the sequel is staying true to its roots. The trailer (embedded above) is comprised of “pre-beta footage” that is gushy, gory, glum and any other “g” adjectives you can think of (except glamorous). It looks graphically nice, the fear factor is there and it seems … well, fun. We say, go Lith go!

[Thanks, Chris]
